Notes:

The Jaques family was a old one of England. Burke mentions a baronetcy in Middlesex Co. tha t became extinct in 1630. John Jaques was a merchant in York; and his son, S. Roger was Mayor of York in 1639. - S. Rog er's 4th son, William was a merchant in London; and S. Roger's great-great-grandson, Laurenc e Sterne was the author of "Tristram Shandy" and "Sentimental Journeys Through France and Ita ly." Knighted by Charles I, the family became known as "Jaques of Elvington." In the 1st half of the 17th century the name is found in the shires, or counties of York, Suf folk, Middlesex and Wilts. DEATH: Will dated 2 June 1601; proved 1601, gave: "To sonnes Thomas and Peter and dau. Elleno r Clarke a busshel of wheate each." And to his 7 grandchildren "a lambe each" "rest to Sonn e Robert, executor requesting my wife Maude to lett sonne Robert occupie my tenament and year d lands for her maintenance of meat, drinks, cloth, etc., etc."
